Pro Basketball Player Provides Model for Chaste Male

An extraordinary article in the sports section of the New York Times (Friday, May 24, 2002) provides an example of a chaste lifestyle by a couple who may never have heard of a chasity belt (someone please tell them).

The article is a profile of Doug Christie, a successful NBA player. It describes in some detail his life with his very lovely wife Jackie. The article says the couple "have gone to great lengths to make sure their vows are kept sacred." That is an understatement. Some highlights:

-- He uses hand signals to send love messages to his wife up to 50 times during games.

-- "With few exceptions, Doug Christie does not look at other women, avoiding dialogue or even eye contact. 'Every conversation I've ever had with a woman since we've been married besides my wife she knows about.'"

--Jackie sends her husband a note before each game and he must write her a reply.

--"Jackie was uncomfortable that women working for the team went into the locker room to distribute statistics after games. So Doug began dressing in an adjacent room."

-- "Jackie has made it clear to her husband and team officials that female reports should not be allowed to interview her husband unless she is present."

-- The couple have a full marriage ceremony every year.

-- "The Christies say their behavior has not been influenced by a religious sect or life altering event."

How extraordinary. A handsome professional athlete in a marriage with a strong woman who controls his access to other women, who demands and receives full communication, and who undoubtedly demands the highest level of service in bed (they have three kids).

Someone should clue Jackie in on chasity belts. She would have her Doug fit in a tight belt within the week! But what a wonderful example the Christies set for all of us who have, or aspire to, a chaste relationship.
