Oldest Known Chastity Belt?

Submitted by: Norbert

Kyeser Drawing This is the oldest picture of a cb and also the earliest reference to a cb I have heard of. In 1405 a retired soldier with the name of Kyeser put everything he knew about the technology of the time (which was mostly for warfare anyway) into one big manuscript. This manuscript the Kyeser Codex also called the 'Bellifortis' is now one of the guarded treasures of the library of Goettingen University here in Germany.

In this codex Kyeser included this drawing. The accompanying text runs 'Est florentinarum hoc bracile dominarum ferreum et durum ab antea sit reseratum'. With my meager latin that could be 'This is a hard iron belt of Florentine women that is thus closed in front'. Perhaps someone can do it better.

The name of the book Bellifortis could mean something like 'strong in war'. I have seen this word Bellifortis used as a synonym for a cb.

kind regards
Norbert
